CaCO3 in today’s industry
"Calcium carbonate, in other words calcite, is micronized after the processes of breaking, grinding and separation and it comes into use as coated or uncoated according to the industry, mostly as a filler material."

CaCO3 in Paints and Coatings
Recently calcium carbonate is a significant material in the modern paint production.
Having convenient particle distribution curve, CaCO3 improves the coverage in paints. Besides, with the high quality whiteness, it is used in the production of bright white paints and surface covering. It also prevents corrosion with the buffer impact. In addition, CaCO3 facilitates the dispersion of the pigments that results in lower cost in paint production. Furthermore, low corrosiveness of CaCO3 improves the rubbing property of surface covering which reduces the corrosion of the material used in paint production. CaCO3 has low oil absorption rate which helps to produce the paints with high rubbing resistance. Being an environment friendly material, CaCO3 could be used in the internal paintings. High quality calcite usage reduces the amount of titanium that is used for bright whiteness, thus it substantially reduces the cost.

Natural calcium carbonate is mostly used filler material in the plastic industry. It increases the electrical resistivity, which results with the increasing performance of the product.
It also supplies higher productivity by the high heat transfer property. Besides, it develops the process by affecting the thermal conductivity and the stickiness because of melting.
In addition to the economical benefits, there are several reasons for CaCO3 to be used in the PVC and Plastic industry, such as;
• increasing the color quality because of the whiteness
• transferring heat and increasing strength
• controlling the rheological properties of PVC
• improving the slipperiness, anti-block and suppression properties of PE films
• increasing resistance in V-belt
• helping polymer mixtures to get ready for processing
• decreasing the cost by filling function
For these reasons, nowadays the natural calcium carbonates are the most widely used filling material in the polymer granules.
CaCO3 in Paper
Micronized calcite is particularly used to produce papers, cardboards, and wall papers by being added into cellulose.
Being cheap and white, calcite has replaced with kaolin in paper industry in last 10 years. Recently, paper industry is using alkali system, which prevents the yellowness and uses more calcite instead of kaolin. This means there is less cellulose and optic whitener consumption. The grinded calcite is used in the half of the 18-20x106; tones of paper industry in the world, where PCC (25-30% coated calcite) is used in the other half.
In Europe, calcite (<2microns) is used in paper industry with the proportions of 75% water and 25% solid as a filling material. In Turkey, SEKA and some private companies control the particle distribution of calcite. The approximate sale in paper industry is 5x10³ tones in Turkey.
CaCO3 in Food
Micronized calcite is used as an additive in foods such as biscuits, bread, chewing gum etc. Because of the chemical purity, color and decrease in the cost, it is used as an indirect source of calcium.
