Pumice “Scoria”

Pumice “Scoria”

Basic pumice is called as “Scoria” in literature, it is a kind of pumice that the specific gravity is around 1-2gr/cm3 and it is mined out in the nature brown, black, reddish colors. The old name for scoria is cinder or volcanic cinder. When it is used for landscaping it is mostly called as “lava rock”.
Basaltic pumice or with the other name lava rock is a highly vesicular volcanic rock that basaltic or andesitic in composition. Basaltic pumice is low in mass as a result of its numerous holes or vesicles, but consider to pumice, all scoria has a specific gravity greater than 1, and because of that sinks in water.

Basalt is the most basic rock of Gabro subgroup and one of the black color, homogenius, highy density and heavy volcanic rocks. The reserves are mostly massive, core and effluence
It’s mostly used as paving, construction rock, bridge construction rock, railway ballast material, stabilisation and protection of offshore pipelines, cables and other kind installations.

The Uses of lava rock (basaltic pumice and basalt);

• Cement products as an additive material
• Concrete blocks
• Lightweight concrete
• Concrete bricks
• Aggregates Drainage
• railway ballast material,
• stabilisation and protection of offshore pipelines, cables and other kinds installations
• Decorative gravels
• Horticulture and agriculture
• Related with a green roof and for a soil substrate where the plants will grow, lava rock is one of the best solutions as lava rock provides many advantages such as:
• Saves water (keeps water as it has porous character, water penetrate to the soil slowly)
• Saves precious nitrogen in the soil
• Protects gardens from snail and slug attack
• Insulates garden soil from the worst of heat and cold
• Improves soil by adding elements
• Light and very easy to apply
• Very good for pots insulates and protects
• Totally natural and no chemicals

(we are supplying a perfect quality natural pozzolan (called also trass or pozzolana) as a clinker replacement material, which has been used )

What is Pozzolan?

They are substances that contain large amounts of colloidal elements, especially active silica. Pozzolanes alone have little or no binding properties. However, when mixed with another binder such as lime or cement, it gains binding property. Therefore, in order for the reaction to occur, the binder must be calcium

It must contain hydroxide.

Today, it is used with cements that can set in water. It can be added into concrete.

Pozzolans

Natural: (Volcanic ash, volcanic tuffs (tras). Silica and Alumina, ie acid character. Lime is basic. They enter into acid-base reaction with lime to become active.

Napoli pozzolans, the island of Santorin in Greece, are the most important deposits. They are also located around the Libyan city of Tripoli. In our country, it is located in Kayseri-Nevşehir region. Artificial: (Baked clay, fly ash, silica-powder, blast furnace slags)

What is Blast Furnace Slags?

In the blast furnace used in iron production, it is the part remaining after iron is taken from the ore. This is called slag (letiye). It contains alumina, silica and lime.

Micronized Calcite - ( CaCO3 ) CaCO3 in today’s industry

Micronized Calcite   - ( CaCO3 )

CaCO3 in today’s industry

"Calcium carbonate, in other words calcite, is micronized after the processes of breaking, grinding and separation and it comes into use as coated or uncoated according to the industry, mostly as a filler material."

CaCO3 in Paints and Coatings

Having convenient particle distribution curve, CaCO3 improves the coverage in paints. Besides, with the high quality whiteness, it is used in the production of bright white paints and surface covering. It also prevents corrosion with the buffer impact. In addition, CaCO3 facilitates the dispersion of the pigments that results in lower cost in paint production. Furthermore, low corrosiveness of CaCO3 improves the rubbing property of surface covering which reduces the corrosion of the material used in paint production. CaCO3 has low oil absorption rate which helps to produce the paints with high rubbing resistance. Being an environment friendly material, CaCO3 could be used in the internal paintings. High quality calcite usage reduces the amount of titanium that is used for bright whiteness, thus it substantially reduces the cost.

CaCO3 in PVC And Plastics

Natural calcium carbonate is mostly used filler material in the plastic industry. It increases the electrical resistivity, which results with the increasing performance of the product.

It also supplies higher productivity by the high heat transfer property. Besides, it develops the process by affecting the thermal conductivity and the stickiness because of melting.

In addition to the economical benefits, there are several reasons for CaCO3 to be used in the PVC and Plastic industry, such as;

• increasing the color quality because of the whiteness

• transferring heat and increasing strength

• controlling the rheological properties of PVC

• improving the slipperiness, anti-block and suppression properties of PE films

• increasing resistance in V-belt

• helping polymer mixtures to get ready for processing

• decreasing the cost by filling function

For these reasons, nowadays the natural calcium carbonates are the most widely used filling material in the polymer granules.   Back

CaCO3 in Food

Micronized calcite is used as an additive in foods such as biscuits, bread, chewing gum etc. Because of the chemical purity, color and decrease in the cost, it is used as an indirect source of calcium.

CaCO3 in Paper

Micronized calcite is particularly used to produce papers, cardboards, and wall papers by being added into cellulose.

Being cheap and white, calcite has replaced with kaolin in paper industry in last 10 years. Recently, paper industry is using alkali system, which prevents the yellowness and uses more calcite instead of kaolin. This means there is less cellulose and optic whitener consumption. The grinded calcite is used in the half of the 18-20x106; tones of paper industry in the world, where PCC (25-30% coated calcite) is used in the other half.

In Europe, calcite (<2microns) is used in paper industry with the proportions of 75% water and 25% solid as a filling material. In Turkey, SEKA and some private companies control the particle distribution of calcite. The approximate sale in paper industry is 5x10³ tones in Turkey.
